MOSQUITO BITE PROTECTION RESOURCES

Many Missouri communities are experiencing flood conditions. As flood waters recede, residents need strategies to minimize the impact of emerging mosquitoes. Fortunately, floodplain mosquitoes are not

considered a public health hazard and do not transmit West Nile virus. Their bites, however, can cause allergic reactions and lead to secondary infections. The Office of Veterinary Public Health has several educational resources on personal protection: Spray Before You Work or Play, How to Choose A Repellent, and How to Protect Your Home

Salmonella Outbreak linked to baby chicks and ducklings

CDC has announced a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Altona linked to contact with baby chicks and ducklings. Findings of multiple traceback investigations of live chicks and ducklings from homes of ill persons have identified a single mail-order hatchery as the source of these chicks and ducklings.

Fortunately, Missouri has not yet seen cases linked to this outbreak, however, we often see cases of salmonellosis linked to baby chicks and ducks given to children as pets during this time of year.

More information regarding this outbreak is available here:

FREE resource for parents from MADD

MADD has created a great new resource for parents. This evidence-based tool, based on Dr. Robert Turrisi’s successful program for parents of college students, was adapted for parents of high school students to assist parents in communicating with their teens about alcohol and to prevent underage drinking. Research has shown a reduction in the teens’ underage drinking by 30%. http://support.madd.org/docs/madd_handbook_email.pdf
