Childhood obesity continues to rise and even kids who are not obese suffer damage to their health when they are not physically active.

KC Healthy Kids supports sidewalks, bicycle paths, trails and safe route programs because one of the best ways to really reduce childhood obesity and inactivity in kids is to ensure the environment around us promotes physical activity.

A bi-partisan amendment is being considered in the Senate (Cardin-Cochran) which would allow local governments access to funds for these items.

Pictures taken of a bracelet that is being sold and used to smoke Marijuana out of. As you can see from the first picture the bracelet appears the same as any other string styled bracelet. Upon closer inspection you will see a metal fitting that when unscrewed reveals a small bowl complete with a filter. There is a small plastic tube woven into the bracelet capped off by a small wooden bead.

Once unscrewed the "bracelet" is ready to be used as a pipe for smoking Marijuana.

Missourians are flocking to their favorite swimming areas with their families to stay cool and have fun as temperatures have soared. Organisms that can cause recreational water illness (RWI) can be found in swimming pools, water/spray parks, hot tubs, water play areas, lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, and oceans.
Some organisms, like Cryptosporidium that causes diarrhea, can live for days in well-maintained pools treated with chlorine.

The Missouri Health Insurance Pool (MHIP), has announced a 23 percent reduction in premiums for its federal pool program. The pool guarantees health coverage for Missourians with pre-existing medical conditions who have been uninsured for six months or longer. The premium reduction aims to make comprehensive medical coverage accessible to Missourians who otherwise could not afford it. Current Immunizations Required for Child Care Enrollment

Children enrolled in child care must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, pneumococcal, polio, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, measles, mumps and rubella and varicella at intervals. State regulation specifies that if the immunization history is not provided on the first day, or the child’s immunizations are not up-to-date, or in progress the child will not be permitted to attend.

Licensing rules require child care facilities, caring for 10 or more children, to review the immunization status of children enrolled in the facility. This information not only protects children but also staff from harmful and potentially deadly vaccine-preventable diseases.

It is the responsibility of the child care facility to maintain the immunization histories of all the children enrolled and to report that information to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services by January 15th of each year.

For additional information regarding immunization requirements for children enrolled in child care, mandatory reporting or to obtain an immunization schedule that includes what age children should be immunized against particular diseases, please visit the Department of Health and Senior Services web site at www.health.mo.gov/living/wellness/immunizations or call 573.751.6124.

Salmonella Outbreak linked to baby chicks and ducklings

CDC has announced a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Altona linked to contact with baby chicks and ducklings. Findings of multiple traceback investigations of live chicks and ducklings from homes of ill persons have identified a single mail-order hatchery as the source of these chicks and ducklings.

Fortunately, Missouri has not yet seen cases linked to this outbreak, however, we often see cases of salmonellosis linked to baby chicks and ducks given to children as pets during this time of year.

In 2008, more than 40,000 children under 16 years of age were treated in emergency rooms due to fall-related injuries. Falls account for 80% of playground injuries and about 45% of injuries are severe, which include fractures, internal injuries, concussions, dislocations, and amputations. Safe Kids reminds parents and caregivers to:

Make sure playground equipment is inspected frequently and kept in good repair. Remove hood and neck drawstrings from children‘s clothing and outerwear and don‘t let kids wear necklaces, purses, or scarves on the playground. Don‘t allow your kids to engage in any pushing, shoving, or crowding around playground equipment. Keep toddlers under age five in a separate play area, away from equipment designed for bigger kids.

Clean & Healthy Produce Spray

The vinegar in this spray has natural anti-bacterial properties, while the lemon juice is a natural astringent. The solution works to both breakdown and clean off pesticides.
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1cup distilled white vinegar
1 tbsp baking soda
1/2 lemon
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a large container. Transfer to a spray bottle with a pump. Spray on produce and let sit for 5 minutes. Scrub and rinse.

Asthma Education Grant Provides Resources, Education, and Assessments

The Acting on Behalf of My Child to Control Asthma grant targets child care centers, families and caregivers of children diagnosed with asthma. The Platte County Health Department can provide education and resources, free to Platte County Child Care Centers/In Home Providers/Caregivers/Parents of children up to the age of 5. Participants will receive informational packets, an in-home or child care facility assessment along with home/center environmental action plans and asthma materials (AeroChambers, Nebulizer Tubing/Masks).

Participants will learn more about:

Signs and symptoms of asthma
What makes asthma worse
Reducing indoor asthma triggers
Using asthma medicines
Helping your child control asthma

Seizure Disorder Training for the Child Care Provider

Approximately 2.5 million Americans have epilepsy, and 350,000+ children are affected by the neurological disorder that causes people to have recurrent seizures. This 1 hour training will help the child care provider recognize common seizure types, appropriate first aid, and how to provide social and academic support for children with epilepsy.

Dangerous alcoholic energy drinks will soon be off store shelves in America

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, officials from the Federal Drug Admininstation, the Federal Trade Commission and the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau took unprecedented action by notifying four producers of alcoholic energy drinks that their products were adulterated and constituted a "public health concern". They were deemed unsafe because of the addition of caffeine as a stimulant. The companies were given 15 days to respond or face product seizure.

We are happy to report that the four producers, Phusion Projects, United Brands, Charge Beverages and New Century Brewing have stopped shipping the seven different products that according to the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy were "designed, branded and promoted to encourage binge drinking."

New federal website shows men how to stay healthy

NEW RESOURCE FOR MISSOURIANS WITH PRE-EXISTING HEALTH CONDITIONS

As you may have heard, there is a new resource available for

Missourians with pre-existing health conditions. The Missouri Health Insurance Pool, (MHIP) has run a state-mandated high-risk pool since 1991. Federal funding from the Patient Protection and

Affordable Care Act has allowed MHIP to create a second, federal pool. This new pool, funded by $81 million in federal money, offers rates about 30 percent lower than the state pool. Further, it places no restrictions on coverage of policyholders’ pre-existing conditions. To be eligible for the new federal pool, an applicant must:

Be a Missouri resident; Have a pre-existing condition; and Be without health insurance for at least the past six months.

MHIP has contracted with RightChoice, a subsidiary of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, to administer the program and Catalyst Rx to provide prescription drug coverage. The state pool has more than 4,000 members. MHIP has projected that the new federal pool can

accommodate approximately 3,600 members between now and 2014, including 1,000 members by the end of 2010. Both the

federal and state high-risk pools will be available until 2014, when the new federal law requires health insurance companies to offer coverage to all applicants, regardless of health status, at standard market rates. Vaccination Helps Protect Pregnant Women from Flu

Pregnant women everywhere know the importance of taking steps to maintain good health. However, one step that is too often overlooked is the need for pregnant and postpartum women to get vaccinated against the flu.

Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other trusted health care providers play a big role in educating expectant mothers on the risks of flu and the importance of vaccination. That’s why today, leaders from some of the most trusted organizations in the health field released a letter, urging all health care providers to promote vaccination in pregnant and postpartum women.

Their message is simple:

1. Flu is more likely to cause severe illness in pregnant women than in women who are not pregnant

2. Pregnant women should get vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies against flu

3. Influenza vaccine is safe during any trimester

Last year pregnant women accounted for 5% of H1N1 flu-related deaths and 7% of flu-related hospitalizations, despite representing only 1% of the U.S. population. Pregnant women with influenza are also at increased risk of developing serious complications, including hospitalization and death.

Please see the following clarification from the Section of Child Care Regulation (SCCR) regarding application of sunscreen in child care:

If a child care provider chooses to put sunscreen on children, the following licensing rules at centers need to be followed:

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(A) The provider is not required to administer medication but may choose to do so.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(B) All medication shall be given to a child only with the dated, written permission of the parent(s) stating the length of time medication may be given.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(D) All nonprescription medication shall be in the original container and labeled by the parent(s) with the child’s name, and instructions for administration, including the times and amounts for dosages.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(E) All medication shall be stored out of reach of children or in a locked container.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(F) Medication shall be returned to storage immediately after use.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(H) Medication shall be returned to the parent(s) or disposed of immediately when no longer needed.

19 CSR 30-62.192(3)(I) The date and time(s) of administration, the name of the individual giving the medication and the quantity of any medication given shall be recorded promptly after administration. This information shall be filed in the child’s record after the medication is no longer necessary.

For Family Homes, these rules are the same, but the #‟s are: 19 CSR 30-61.185(3)(A), (B), (D), (E),(F), (H),and (I).

LE rules also support the above. 19 CSR 30-60.060(10)(A) through (G)

Although SCCR can’t require providers to administer sunscreen, we do require that they protect the children from over-exposure to the sun. If they choose not to use sunscreen, they’ll have to demonstrate other ways that the children will be protected from the sun, such as shaded areas, hats, long sleeves and pants, and changing the time of day that the children go outside.

1. Infant Death Prompts Recall of Ring Slings Made by Sprout Stuff Due to Suffocation Risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Sprout Stuff, of Austin, Texas, is announcing the recall of about 40 Sprout Stuff infant ring slings. CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using these slings due to a risk of suffocation to infants.

CPSC and Sprout Stuff are aware of one report of a death of a 10-day-old boy in the recalled sling in Round Rock, Texas in 2007.

The Sprout Stuff infant ring sling is fabric/natural muslin and comes with or without a shoulder pad. The sling is worn by parents and caregivers to carry a child up to two years of age. "Sprout Stuff" is printed on the back side of the tail's hem.

Sprout Stuff sold the recalled infant slings, which were made in the United States, directly to consumers between October 2006 and May 2007 for between $35 and $45. Sprout Stuff is directly contacting known purchasers of the recalled infant slings.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled slings and contact Sprout Stuff to return the sling for a full refund. Contact Sprout Stuff toll-free at (877) 319-3103 anytime, email the firm at sproutstuffrefunds@gmail.com or contact the firm by mail at Sprout Stuff Refunds, P.O. Box 612, Buda, Texas 78610.

Do not attempt to fix these carriers.

Additional Message from CPSC: On March 12, 2010, CPSC issued a warning about sling carriers for babies. Slings can pose two different types of suffocation hazards to babies. In the first few months of life, babies cannot control their heads because of weak neck muscles. The sling's fabric can press against an infant's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and rapidly suffocating a baby within a minute or two. Additionally, where a sling keeps the infant in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply. The baby will not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate. CPSC has determined that a mandatory standard is needed for infant sling carriers. While a mandatory standard is being developed, CPSC staff is working with ASTM International and concerned companies such as Infantino to quickly develop an effective voluntary standard for slings. There currently are no safety standards for infant sling carriers.

This module is an overview of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the criteria used to diagnose children with ASD. Family members, childcare providers, school personnel and others who interact with young children are encouraged to take this training module to learn more about the signs of ASD. The is hosted on the University of Missouri Extension website. To view the training you will need to register for an Extension Passport and select the Understanding Autism course to view. There is no charge for the Passport or to view the training. It is recommended that you bookmark the module once you have logged into to view it. This recall includes fixed-side and drop-side cribs. These cribs pose a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment, strangulation, suffocation and fall hazards to infants and toddlers.

The crib's tubular metal mattress-support frame can bend or detach and cause part of the mattress to collapse, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.

When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop side and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing a risk of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock.

3. Gap Recalls Baby Swimsuits Due to Strangulation Hazard

Name of Product: Baby swimsuits

Retailer: Gap Inc., of San Francisco, Calif.

Hazard: The swimsuits have halter straps that were manufactured too short causing the plastic ring located at the neck of the swimsuit to press against the child's throat and obstruct the airway. This poses a strangulation hazard to the child.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received two consumer complaints. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The baby swimsuits were sold in two styles: number 706260 is blue and white and number 700452 is red and white. The style number can be found on the label located on the swimsuit. Both swimsuits were sold in infant sizes up to 24 months and are made of a synthetic knit stretch fabric of polyester and spandex. The straps are made of the same material as the body.

Sold at: The babyGap, GapKids, Gap, Gap Outlet stores nationwide and online at www.gap.com from February 2010 through April 2010 for between

$17 and $20.

Manufactured in: Indonesia and China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled swimsuits away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Contact Gap to return by mail if purchased online.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services recently revised the Day Care Immunization Rule, 19 CSR 20-28.040.

Effective July 1, 2010 the following new requirements will be implemented for incoming enrollees:

• Age appropriate pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) for children attending day care, preschool, or nursery schools caring for ten or more children. Age appropriate refers to the right or suitable age for which a particular vaccine is recommended.

• For all children who have had varicella (chickenpox) disease, a licensed doctor of medicine (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO) may sign and place on file with the child care facility a written statement documenting the month and year of previous varicella (chickenpox) disease as satisfactory evidence of having had the disease. Parental or guardian statements of disease will no longer be acceptable beginning July 1, 2010.

It is important to emphasize to parents that children should receive all immunizations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The ACIP schedules can be obtained at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/child-schedule.htm.

A fourth-grade student in Olympia, Washington has won her local science fair by demonstrating that hand sanitizers suck at killing E. coli.

Nine-year-old Celia Vernon won her class science fair at Roosevelt Elementary with an experiment involving a live sample of E. coli. Under the guidance of her father, a biologist with a background in microbiology, Vernon tested several solutions on E.coli, including Purell brand hand sanitizer.

In a side-by-side comparison with common bleach, the E.coli on the Purell side survived. On the bleach side, it died.

The Vernons say they have no bone to pick with Purell, but were surprised to learn it doesn't kill one of the main dangers associated with exposures from using bathrooms.

A spokesperson for the makers of Purell told KING 5 News that it stands by its claims to kill 99 percent of germs and suggested we contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A CDC spokesperson says they have not studied hand sanitizers specifically on E.coli and recommend hand sanitizers only when soap and water are not available.

I know 99 per cent sounds cool, but considering the volume of bacteria out there, it don’t mean squat.
